Seventy three days before she was scheduled to race at the 1992 Barcelona Games, Laumenn suffered severe leg damage in a boat collision (a dumbass German pair crashed into her during a warm up and severed her leg). With extensive bone, nerve, and tissue damage, it looked like Laumenn’s career was over. She underwent multiple operations and intensive rehabilitation but by the time the Barcelona Games rolled around, she was still walking with a cane and couldn’t stand for more than fifteen minutes at a time. BUT, being the sav that she is, she rowed in the single event anyways and took home the bronze medal.
